Canada UK Energy Summit, London

Wednesday, March 13, 2024
One Whitehall Place, London, UK

The 14th annual Canada UK Energy Summit gathered energy sector leaders from the UK and Canada to explore avenues for advancing bilateral commercial collaboration, including to bolster energy security. Discussions will cover industrial decarbonization, hydrogen production and use, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) and clean electrification technologies.

One hundred and forty company representatives participated, in addition to thirty Canadian and British government representatives who are responsible for the advancement of policy and funding frameworks. The Summit included a business ‘mission’ of 25 Canadian entrepreneurs, some of whom presented during the afternoon session.

The Summit covered the following themes:

  • Security and transition: Advancing the Canada UK collaboration.
  • Shades of hydrogen and clean fuels.
  • Advancing CCUS projects in the UK and Canada.
  • Low and zero emissions electrification

Background

The Canada UK Energy Summit was founded in 2011 to advance transatlantic commercial and policy cooperation. The Summit includes participation from industry, finance and government from Canada, the UK and globally.

Reception

A networking reception took place following the Summit in the grand foyer of Canada House (the Canadian High Commission) on Trafalgar Square.

UK industrial cluster seminar and industrial site visit

An aim of the Canada UK Energy Summit is to provide a forum for generating commercial opportunities for Canadian exporters. The Summit included a training seminar for a delegation of Canadian CCUS and hydrogen companies on UK industrial clusters, including how participate in decarbonization projects.

Following the Summit on March 13th, the Canadian delegation conducted a site visit on March 14 & 15 to the Net Zero Teesside industrial Custer.

Wednesday, March 13
One Whitehall Place, London
MC Jason Langrish, President, The Energy Roundtable & Canada Europe Roundtable for Business
      1:00 pm Opening remarks

  • The Honourable Ralph Goodale, High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
     1:15 pm Canada UK collaboration

Industry and government are working to advance the development of new energy technologies in efforts to meet our emissions targets. This includes hydrogen and supporting technologies and infrastructure projects, such as CCUS, clean electrification and clean fuels that will be essential for decarbonizing industrial sectors. The scale of the transformation is unrecognizable to what was happening only a few years ago. Panelists will discuss the frameworks and technologies that are facilitating the transition to a low carbon industrial economy, including initiatives to expand Canada UK cooperation and enhance energy security.

  • Heather Chalmers, President, Growth Markets, GE Vernova & President & CEO, GE Canada
  • Emma Pinchbeck, Chief Executive, ENERGY UK

Chair: Peter Tertzakian, Deputy Director, ARC Energy Research Institute

     2:10 pm

Industrial decarbonization catalysts: Hydrogen, sustainable fuels and CCS

Electrification – clean power – provides a near-term pathway for emissions reductions in many sectors including transport and the built environment. But decarbonizing through switching to low carbon fuels, including clean hydrogen, sustainable biofuels and carbon capture and storage is expected to play a critical role in ‘hard-to-decarbonize’ sectors such as heavy industry and medium- and heavy-duty freight. Even in scenarios with ambitious electrification, it is estimated that more than half of energy demand in 2050 may need to be met with clean fuels and carbon capture to meet a net-zero goal. The panel will examine how hydrogen, sustainable fuels and carbon capture projects co-exist and evolve at scale in industrial ecosystems in Canada and the UK and their nexus with the broader low-carbon fuel sector.

  • Joseph Seifert, Chief Executive Officer, EET Hydrogen (HyNet Cluster)
  • Andy Cornell, CEO, Advanced Biofuel Solutions Limited
  • Papari Devi, Head, Carbon Capture & H2, Hatch
  • John Picken, Business Development Director, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA, Ltd

Advancing CCUS projects in the UK and Canada

Strengthened climate goals and new investment incentives are delivering unprecedented momentum for CCUS. Capture, storage and removal technologies will play an important role in meeting net zero targets, including as one of few solutions to tackle emissions from heavy industry and to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, CCUS offers compelling avenues for the production of hydrogen and clean fuels. The panel will discuss how these technologies and projects are being advanced in Canada and the UK and explore the potential for broader collaboration between the two territories.
