Industrial decarbonization catalysts: Hydrogen, sustainable fuels and CCS

Electrification – clean power – provides a near-term pathway for emissions reductions in many sectors including transport and the built environment. But decarbonizing through switching to low carbon fuels, including clean hydrogen, sustainable biofuels and carbon capture and storage is expected to play a critical role in ‘hard-to-decarbonize’ sectors such as heavy industry and medium- and heavy-duty freight. Even in scenarios with ambitious electrification, it is estimated that more than half of energy demand in 2050 may need to be met with clean fuels and carbon capture to meet a net-zero goal. The panel will examine how hydrogen, sustainable fuels and carbon capture projects co-exist and evolve at scale in industrial ecosystems in Canada and the UK and their nexus with the broader low-carbon fuel sector.

Advancing CCUS projects in the UK and Canada

Strengthened climate goals and new investment incentives are delivering unprecedented momentum for CCUS. Capture, storage and removal technologies will play an important role in meeting net zero targets, including as one of few solutions to tackle emissions from heavy industry and to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, CCUS offers compelling avenues for the production of hydrogen and clean fuels.
